Fluted Cape

One of Tasmania’s Great Short Walks

by Susie Baber  |  2 March 2022

Bruny Island | 7.5 km | moderate/hard |  2.5 hrs

The Fluted Cape circuit can be walked in either direction. We walked the track in a clockwise direction, which gets the steep climb over at the beginning and a gentle return walk back to the beach. The walk starts along the same track as the Grass Point walk – an easier, family friendly alternative, out to the point.

The walk starts along the beach

From the carpark near the jetty, at the end of Adventure Bay Road, stroll along the sand to the eastern end of the beach. Cross a small creek and head up the stone steps to the walking track signposted Fluted Cape Circuit. This section of the track is mostly flat and very well defined. There are lovely views over the crystal-clear waters of the bay and numerous signs along the track with historical information about the whaling industry in the area between 1820-40.

Just after passing the entry sign for South Bruny National Park the track divides. The track to the right is signposted to Fluted Cape, this is the track we will be coming back down. To do the walk in a clockwise direction continue to Grassy Point, until the trail ends on a pebbly beach. Spend some time exploring the beach area, the views back to Adventure Bay are stunning. At the end of the point a narrow gulch runs between the beach and Penguin Island, home to many different sea birds.

From Grass Point, the trail climbs steeply to the summit of Fluted Cape (272m). This part of the track is a very steep climb and a bit harder to follow than the earlier track. But all the work is worth the effort when you are rewarded with spectacular views of the Cape’s towering dolerite cliffs and Penguin Island. We stop several times and get the camera out as there seems to be an even better view around every corner (and I need the rest stops – it is very steep). The trail skirts very close to the cliff edge in some places so take care, if you are walking with kids keep a keen eye on them.

Getting very steeper
Views worth ever step

At the summit you will enjoy wonderful views of North Bruny Island and the Neck. On a clear day the ridge-lines of Cape Pillar are even visible. When you have finished exploring the summit cliffs follow the trail inland. A welcome relief after the climb to the summit this track zig-zags gently down through eucalyptus forest until you meet the original track along the shoreline. From here you simply retrace your steps back to the beach and the carpark.

If you are after a shorter but still very pretty walk try the return walk to Grass Point.
